Korzhyn, 1950

1950s. Kyzylorda Region. Wool, weaving. Collection of the A. Kasteev State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Korzhyn is a traditional bag with two symmetrical pockets connected by a gusset. It was used for carrying and storing items, and was secured to a saddle or a camel’s pack. This example is made from woollen yarn using a weaving technique. The ornamentation is generally based on the symmetry of the bag’s two ‘wings’. The composition is characterised by clear geometric patterns: diamond-shaped rosettes, various geometric elements, zigzag patterns and striped motifs are used. The colour scheme is traditionally contrasting, with red dominating and black, white, blue or green accents. In Kazakh culture, the korzhyn symbolises prosperity, hospitality and family well-being.
