The principles of pattern creation in the artistic development of woodworking can be seen in the manufacture of yurt components such as shanyrak and uykov. The small size of the components meant that frieze compositions were used, dominated by carved ornamental elements or sets of silver plaques.Kazakh folklore abounds with descriptions of yurt details, demonstrating the people’s deep understanding of architectural harmony and decorative art. Shanyrak, uyky, kiizdik and other elements of the dwelling are often mentioned in fairy tales, legends and epics, where their rich decor emphasises the status of the family, cultural values and aesthetic taste of the owners.
