The work is an expressive sculptural composition in which the realistic basis of the image is combined with elements of distortion and expressive generalisation of form. The sculpture is cast in bronze, a technique that allows the artist to work actively with the surface texture, emphasising the materiality and physicality of the image.Compositionally, the work is built on a tense dynamic: the animal’s figure is arched, forming a closed contour in which the tail fulfils not only an anatomical but also a compositional and semantic function. This sculptural gesture creates a sense of cyclicality and internal tension, confining the movement of the form within the sculptural volume. The contrast between the predator’s massive body and the small figure of its prey heightens the drama of the scene and emphasises the moment of climactic interaction.Attention is drawn to the treatment of the body: exposed ribs, a fragmented surface and distorted proportions form an image that lies on the border between naturalism and symbolic abstraction. The texture of the bronze is unevenly worked, incorporating rough and smooth areas, which creates a complex play of light and enhances the expressiveness of the sculpture.The work’s semantic scope extends beyond the zoomorphic subject matter. The image of the ‘rat-catcher’ can be interpreted as a metaphor for power, control and instinctive aggression, as well as an allusion to social mechanisms of suppression and hierarchy. In this context, the sculpture takes on the character of a philosophical statement about the nature of power, vulnerability and the inevitability of confrontation.Overall, the work demonstrates the characteristic features of contemporary Kazakhstani sculpture: a synthesis of figuration and conceptualism, an emphasis on the plastic expressiveness of the material, and a striving for a multi-layered symbolic interpretation of the image.
