A Virtual Journey into the World of Kazakhstan’s Artistic Heritage

This Web Gallery presents the diversity of artistic practices in Kazakhstan, reflecting the continuity of cultural traditions and the dynamic development of contemporary creative processes. The virtual exhibition features works based on national images, symbols, and themes, as well as artworks by contemporary artists who reinterpret the country’s cultural heritage through contemporary artistic forms, expressive means, and modern technologies.

The selected works demonstrate the relationship between traditional and contemporary art, revealing the distinctive features of the national worldview, cultural identity, and cultural meanings. The presented materials allow viewers to trace how elements of historical and cultural heritage are reflected in contemporary artistic practice, while maintaining their significance and relevance in an increasingly globalized world.

The tapestry ‘The Sacred Tree’ presents a multi-layered visual model of the world, based on the archetype of Baiterek, which is one of the key symbols of the Kazakh mythopoetic tradition. The work interprets the ancient cosmogonic image as a universal system of connection between different levels of existence and cultural memory.The composition is structured according to the principle of vertical cosmology. The tree becomes the axis of the universe, uniting the celestial, earthly and subterranean worlds. The upper register, inhabited by birds, symbolises the realm of the spirit, sacred knowledge and the future; the middle level, featuring animals, architectural motifs and elements of human life, corresponds to the realm of earthly existence and collective history; the lower zone, with its aquatic creatures, alludes to the archaic, chthonic principle, the memory of ancestors and the primordial foundations of the world. The colour scheme plays a particular role. The deep black background evokes a sense of infinite cosmic space or primordial chaos, from which the luminous structure of the tree emerges. Golden, ochre and azure accents create an effect of inner radiance, reinforcing the sacred nature of the image. The contrast between light and darkness takes on symbolic significance: the tree becomes a symbol of life, order and spiritual energy emerging from chaos.
