Lullaby, 2012. Oil on canvas. From the artist’s private archive

Nurlan Kilibayev

The work is a lyrical exploration of the themes of motherhood, family and the continuity of generations. The artist draws on one of the most sacred images in Kazakh culture — the lullaby — as a symbol of care, the spiritual bond between mother and child, and the passing on of traditions and national values. The soft plasticity of the Mother’s figure, the flowing lines and the balance of the composition create a sense of peace and harmony. The colour scheme is rendered in a warm palette. Muted shades of ochre, brown, gold and pastel tones enhance the atmosphere of cosiness and emotional closeness. Through the image of the Mother and child, the artist seems to reveal ideas of preserving national memory, family values and spiritual continuity, which makes the painting significant in the context of the development of contemporary Kazakhstani painting in the 21st century.
