Prayer Rug, 1970. S. Burankulova

1970. Prayer Rug. Felt, traditional felting technique. From the collection of the A. Kasteyev National Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Inventory No. 244-v).

The piece is crafted using the traditional felting technique from natural white felt, whose purity of color symbolizes the spiritual sanctity and sincere intentions of the worshipper. The composition is concise yet deeply symbolic: two vertical ornamental bands visually define a sacred space, guiding the viewer’s gaze and focusing attention. The decoration is created using an inlaid felt pattern technique, featuring predominantly deep burgundy and dark red tones, complemented by small geometric accents in blue and green, such as triangles and diamonds. The restrained color palette and the soft texture of the felt emphasize the intimate nature of the object, creating an atmosphere of serenity, contemplation, and inner peace.
