The Burden of the Earth, 2023. Oil on canvas. From the artist’s personal archive

Daria Kairambaeva

At the centre of the composition is a nude human figure in a foetal position, surrounded by massive kulpytas — Kazakh gravestones. The kulpytas, covered in ornamentation, act as bearers of memory and tradition: they simultaneously weigh down with the ‘burden’ of history and create a protective space. The desolate, scorched landscape reinforces the sense of being outside of time and a specific place. The monochromatic earthy-golden palette and the inner light emanating from the composition lend the scene a sacred character. The work explores the philosophy of the ‘burden of the earth’: the legacy of our ancestors is both a weight and a protection, whilst life is presented as a continuous cycle of birth, memory and a return to one’s origins.
