The ceramic bowl shown here belongs to the tradition of glazed pottery and demonstrates a consistent combination of utilitarian form and elaborate ornamental decoration. The decorative scheme is organised in bands. The focus is on a wide ornamental band in the upper part of the body, where a rhythmically arranged frieze is placed. The ornamental elements, executed in dark (probably manganese) pigment, form a repeating silhouette pattern. The colour scheme is based on a combination of a light engobe background with underglaze painting in bluish-green and dark brown tones. The horizontal bands encircling the vessel reinforce the compositional structure, emphasising the form’s tectonics. The slight blurring of the lines lends the decoration a painterly expressiveness.
