This Web Gallery presents the diversity of artistic practices in Kazakhstan, reflecting the continuity of cultural traditions and the dynamic development of contemporary creative processes. The virtual exhibition features works based on national images, symbols, and themes, as well as artworks by contemporary artists who reinterpret the country’s cultural heritage through contemporary artistic forms, expressive means, and modern technologies.

The ceramic bowl shown here belongs to the tradition of glazed pottery and demonstrates a consistent combination of utilitarian form and elaborate ornamental decoration. The decorative scheme is organised in bands. The focus is on a wide ornamental band in the upper part of the body, where a rhythmically arranged frieze is placed. The ornamental elements, executed in dark (probably manganese) pigment, form a repeating silhouette pattern. The colour scheme is based on a combination of a light engobe background with underglaze painting in bluish-green and dark brown tones. The horizontal bands encircling the vessel reinforce the compositional structure, emphasising the form’s tectonics. The slight blurring of the lines lends the decoration a painterly expressiveness.
