Mes

From a private collection

MESA popular item of tableware among nomads was the mes, a wineskin made from a whole goatskin, designed for storing and transporting liquid foods such as kymyz, shubat or ayran. To make a mes, the skin was carefully processed, dyed with paint obtained from willow bark, and smoked. Thanks to its shape and durability, the mes was extremely convenient for travelling. In national culture, it is perceived as a symbol of abundance, fullness and completeness.
