Traditional and contemporary art of Kazakhstan

The sculpture belongs to the genre of contemporary urban art, where traditional images of nomadic culture are reinterpreted through the aesthetics of industrial sculpture. The composition is constructed as a dynamic group: the horseman with a drawn bow and the rearing horse evoke classic motifs of the heroic epic, yet are rendered through the language of technological art.The form is created not by solid modelling, but by assembling disparate metal elements. Gears, chains, mechanical parts and fragments of metal structures form a complex textural environment in which the boundary between a living organism and a machine is blurred. The result is the image of a peculiar ‘techno-hero’, combining the archetype of the nomad with the visual aesthetics of the industrial era.The composition is organised diagonally and built on a sharp plastic impulse. The horse’s body is thrust upwards, intensifying the sense of tension and movement, whilst the bow, pointing to the side, sets a spatial vector and extends the action beyond the sculpture itself. Thanks to this, the object actively interacts with its surroundings and draws the viewer into a field of imagined movement.The artist deliberately preserves the openness of the structure and the rough texture of the material. Weld marks, mechanical joints and the rigidity of the metal parts become part of the artistic expression, in keeping with the steampunk aesthetic, which is based on the demonstration of the material’s structural integrity and industrial heritage.The work’s meaning is built upon the intersection of two cultural layers: the traditional image of the Kazakh batyr as a symbol of strength and freedom, and the ‘ ’ of the post-industrial world, where man and technology form a single system. In the context of Almaty, the sculpture takes on additional significance, visualising the transition from a steppe cultural tradition to a modern urban space.
