Tuskiz, 20th c.

SMA RK Collection. 20th century. Vol. 97. • Eastern Kazakhstan. Woolen cloth, drape, cotton, silk threads, tambour stitch

One of the unique tuskiiz. The composition of this piece is based on the principle of strict symmetry around a vertical axis. In the centre, closer to the top, there is a large round medallion, inside which is a floral ornament resembling a rosette. The medallion is framed by a decorative ring with wavy and spiral elements. On either side of the central element are elongated vertical motifs resembling the ‘tree of life’. They form a rhythmic pattern and create a sense of upward movement. The outer frame is decorated with an ornamental border, which completes the composition and unites all the elements into a single artistic whole. The ornament densely covers the entire surface of the piece. The main background colour is a rich red, which dominates the composition. Red traditionally symbolises vitality, well-being and prosperity. The contrasting combination of colours enhances the decorative effect and makes the ornament more expressive.
