Muraq, 19th c.
Early 19th century. Collection of the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Belonged to Sultan Baimukhamed Aishuakov.
The headdress has a tall conical shape with wide brims. The base of the piece is a dense fabric – dark burgundy velvet, richly decorated with gold thread embroidery. The ornamentation covers almost the entire surface of the headdress, forming a complex decorative composition. The decorative design is executed using embroidery and features floral motifs. The patterns include stylised flowers, leaves and flowing scrolls, forming a symmetrical and rhythmic composition. The central part of the crown is occupied by large floral rosettes, from which shoots and ornamental elements radiate outwards. The brim of the headdress is also adorned with dense ornamentation, which enhances the decorative effect and lends the piece a ceremonial character. The colour scheme is based on the contrast between dark and gold embroidery. This combination is characteristic of ceremonial garments and emphasises the owner’s high social status. The murak was part of the ceremonial costume of members of the Kazakh aristocracy and was worn on ceremonial occasions.
