Mural ‘Agashpen omir suru’ – ‘Living with a Tree’. Astana, 29 Beibitshilik Street. 2019 Photo by Chingiz Bakishevhttps://www.the-village-kz.com/village/city/city-guide/17307-graffiti-i-muraly-astany

Askhat AkhmedyarovThe work was created as part of the Second International Street Culture Festival ‘URBAN ART ASTANA 2019’Concept: ‘Urban Nature’. Curator: Olga Veselovahttps://cultura.kz/2019-urban-art-astana

The mural was created as part of a competition dedicated to urban environmental issues. The idea of painting a huge tree sprouting through five storeys of a ‘Khrushchev-era’ block of flats, which inspired the artist, reflected his desire to demonstrate to city dwellers the symbolic power of nature right beside them, and a call to appreciate its beauty and strength. This visual ‘greening’ reminds city dwellers of the value of trees, which play a vital role in creating an environmentally sustainable and comfortable urban space.‘Life’ with a tree, evoking the ecological qualities of a green forest, highlights its significant aesthetic and social role within the confined conditions of an urbanised space of concrete ‘boxes’. Coexisting with such a ‘tree’ helps foster a sense of respect for nature and its role in human life and strengthens a sense of connection to it.
