Cuckoo, 2023. Chamotte, glaze
Asel Berdigulova
The composition is a sculpture combining anthropomorphic and animalistic motifs. It is based on a stylised human head, executed in a rough, sculptural manner, with an emphasis on the textural quality of the chamotte. The upper part of the sculpture is crowned with the figure of a bird—a cuckoo—creating a symbolic two-dimensional image. The contrast between the massive, heavy base and the light, almost fragile figure of the bird enhances the expressiveness of the work. The surface texture is deliberately uneven and relief-like, emphasising the material’s natural origin and reinforcing the impression of ‘hand-modelling’. Glaze is applied selectively, highlighting individual elements of the form. The sculpture demonstrates the characteristic features of contemporary artist-made ceramics: the abstract nature of form, symbolism and an emphasis on the material as a vehicle for meaning.
