Tuskiz, 20th c.

SMA RK Collection. 20th century. 492-pr • Eastern Kazakhstan • Velvet, broadcloth, braid, coloured threads, tambour stitch

A rare specimen, owing to its unusual compositional structure, rich ornamentation and dark background. The composition is organised according to a horizontal-register principle, which is relatively uncommon for Kazakh tuskiiz. The surface is divided into three horizontal bands (registers). Each band contains a series of circular medallions, within which various ornamental compositions are arranged. The ornamental scheme is characterised by a great variety of motifs. Between the medallions are plant shoots and scrolls, creating a flowing rhythm and unifying the composition. The contrast between the dark background and the bright threads enhances the expressiveness of the pattern. The colours are distributed evenly, creating a harmonious decorative balance.
