A Virtual Journey into the World of Kazakhstan’s Artistic Heritage

This Web Gallery presents the diversity of artistic practices in Kazakhstan, reflecting the continuity of cultural traditions and the dynamic development of contemporary creative processes. The virtual exhibition features works based on national images, symbols, and themes, as well as artworks by contemporary artists who reinterpret the country’s cultural heritage through contemporary artistic forms, expressive means, and modern technologies.

The selected works demonstrate the relationship between traditional and contemporary art, revealing the distinctive features of the national worldview, cultural identity, and cultural meanings. The centrepiece of the composition is an oval medallion with a large chalcedony inlay, around which a system of radially arranged decorative elements is arranged. The lower part is complemented by a pendant chain connecting the main body to a separate three-dimensional element, giving the piece a pronounced vertical dynamic.The design is based on the principles of centrality and symmetry. Elements with turquoise inlays are arranged around the central stone, united by a complex ornamental system. The techniques of graining and scani form a dense decorative surface and enhance the textural richness of the piece. A spherical pendant module with a cross-shaped finish adds extra depth and makes the composition more plastically complex.The combination of chalcedony and turquoise is linked to traditional beliefs regarding the protective properties of stones. Chalcedony is associated with inner stability and harmony, whilst in jewellery culture, turquoise is often seen as a symbol of protection and well-being. The cross-shaped structure of the pendant element reinforces the symbolism of balance and the intersection of different principles. Overall, the piece is perceived as a system of interconnected protective and status symbols.Of particular interest is the combination of a traditional ornamental base with a complex structural logic. The designer expands the classic form of the brooch through the use of pendant elements and the active sculptural treatment of the surface. As a result, the piece transcends the boundaries of a conventional decorative accessory and takes on the character of an independent work of art.
