Kapsyrma

North Kazakhstan. Silver, carnelian, turquoise, filigree. A. Kasteyev National Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Kapsyrma (clasp). The item belongs to the category of belt fastenings and serves both a structural function of fastening and a pronounced decorative and representational role. The design consists of two symmetrical flaps joined by a central element, forming a unified compositional field. The composition is based on axial symmetry and a centred structure. Each panel is oval with pointed edges, at the centre of which are large carnelian inlays. Between them is a square connecting element with an additional stone inlay, serving as a compositional focal point. The ornamental scheme is executed in filigree and consists of a complex lace-like interweaving of fine metal wires. Concentric zones are formed around the central inlays, filled with small turquoise inlays and decorative granulated elements. The linear rhythm of the filigree curls creates an effect of openwork and visual lightness in the design.Technologically, the piece demonstrates a high level of jewellery craftsmanship: the filigree forms the main ornamental framework, whilst the carnelian and turquoise inlays are set in sockets with a delicate setting, ensuring their stability and decorative expressiveness.Overall, the clasp reflects the development of the North Kazakh tradition towards a more complex decorative structure, where priority is given to openwork techniques and multicoloured inlay, creating a refined and visually rich artistic image.
