Madikhan Kalmakhanov

At the centre of the work is a young woman in profile, seated on a raised platform covered with a traditional korpe. In contrast to the bright and colourful background of the painting, the figure is rendered in subdued grey tones. A small kitten lies before her, its presence reinforcing a sense of solitude and quiet everyday life. The artist likely sought to convey the heroine’s sense of loneliness and her detachment from the surrounding world. This idea is emphasised by the contrast between the woman’s serene image and the dynamic background. The alternation of bright colour bands creates a sense of movement in the air and light, heightens the emotional resonance of the work and echoes the title of the painting — ‘Breath of Spring’. Despite the richness of the surrounding space, the heroine herself remains immersed in her own inner state.Stylistically, the work belongs to contemporary Kazakhstani realism with pronounced decorative features.
