Alysha Khan Mausoleum

16th century. Ulytau Region

The mausoleum, built of fired brick, ranks among the outstanding monuments of portal-dome architecture in medieval Kazakhstan. Its composition is distinguished by its monumentality and the harmonious combination of structural logic with rich decorative ornamentation. The dimensions of the structure create an imposing volume that dominates the surrounding landscape. The architectural appearance of the mausoleum is based on the contrast between the massive cubic base and the soaring spheroconical dome, set upon a hexadecagonal drum. The main façade is dominated by a tall portal with imposing pilasters and a deep arched niche facing south-west. The portal serves as the composition’s principal artistic focal point, emphasising the grandeur of the entrance. The arch is adorned with a decorative ornamental band. This ornament creates an effect of continuous movement and symbolises the idea of infinity and the unity of the world. The decorative brickwork of the walls, based on an alternation of vertically and horizontally laid bricks, lends the mausoleum a particular artistic expressiveness. This technique creates a complex interplay of light and shadow.
