More than Success

Unending applause, hundreds of new fans and interesting proposals regarding following performances. These are the results of the trip of Astana Opera soloists to the Italian city of Genoa, Teatro Carlo Felice, where on July 10 the artists have performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with great success.

The theatre hall is sold-out – two thousand spectators have bought their tickets days before the concert. Those who were unable to attend watched the live broadcast on the opera house’s website. Honored Workers of the Republic of Kazakhstan mezzo-soprano Dina Khamzina and baritone Talgat Mussabayev, international competitions laureates soprano Saltanat Akhmetova and tenor Medet Chotabayev appear onstage. They perform together with Italian Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of a famous British conductor Jonathan Webb and choir led by Pablo Assante.

With bated breath the audience is listening to the Symphony No. 9 – German composer’s outstanding masterpiece. The work plays a significant role in today’s society; it is a hymn to the brotherhood of nations. Standing ovation: the audience has called the artists to bow four times. On the next day after the performance, Roberto Iovino – a correspondent for «La Repubblica» emotionally wrote, «Bravo for young singers from Kazakhstan!»

In is not a secret that the Expo Milano 2015 is taking place in Italy. Astana Opera soloists symbolically took over the baton and passed it to Kazakhstan for Expo 2017. In addition, the performance of our soloists closed the symphony season of the Teatro Carlo Felice, the management of which has emphasized that such joint concerts are important for the artists’ growth and strengthening of the cultural ties between the two countries.

Today, the singers have arrived in their Homeland. They enthusiastically recall the warm welcome of the Italians. Medet Chotabaev said that he was very nervous, but felt calm after the first rehearsal with Maestro Jonathan Webb. Renowned conductor praised the good preparation of Kazakh artists. In addition, the singer spoke warmly about the Italian choir, the history of which begins since 1828, saying that the singers made them feel very welcome. – It was such a big success that I think we have worthily represented Kazakhstan and Astana Opera.

In turn, Talgat Mussabayev noted the beautiful-sounding orchestra. The leading soloist believes that the biggest reward was not the flowers and unending ovations, but the congratulations of fellow musicians, who gave them their professional assessment. Dina Khamzina and Saltanat Akhmetova added that the trip was very productive.

One of the most important news that the soloists have brought home is that in November this year Teatro Carlo Felice is awaiting their return to perform in G. Puccini’s opera «La Boheme».
