Art of independent Kazakhstan

Mixed media in contemporary Kazakh art represents one of the most dynamically developing areas of artistic practice, reflecting the processes of transformation in visual culture. This movement is based on the synthesis of various materials, techniques and media within a single artwork, including painting, textiles, collage, photography, digital graphics, installation and elements of decorative and applied art. In the context of Kazakhstani art, mixed media takes on a distinct character: contemporary artists actively employ felt, textiles, embroidery, leather, metal, ornamental compositions and much more in a harmonious synthesis. In this respect, artistic practice takes on an interdisciplinary nature.

One significant trend is the transformation of textile art into a form of conceptual expression. In the works of Kazakhstani artists, textiles function not only as material objects but also as carriers of symbolic meanings linked to memory, history, archetypes and cultural continuity. The use of felt, traditional fabrics, elements of tekemet and embroidery allows artists to reinterpret cultural codes within a new artistic context.

The concept of cultural hybridity, based on the interaction between local cultural traditions and global artistic practices, plays a significant role in the development of domestic mixed media. This results in the formation of a new visual language in which traditional symbols are combined with the aesthetics of postmodernism, installation art, digital art, performance art and interdisciplinary art.

From the perspective of visual semiotics, mixed media in Kazakhstan can be viewed as a system of cultural codes and sign structures. In such works, the material serves not only a technical but also a semantic function. In this context, the art object becomes a form of cultural communication in which texture, material and visual structure contribute to the formation of the work’s meaning.
